Is open source software secure?

Simply being open source is no guarantee of security. It does however have a few things going for it. The fact that many people are able to view potential problems in the source code makes it less likely that security issues will go unnoticed and therefore exploited for very long. Developers writing open source software are also forced to adhere to coding standards and best practices due to the collaborative nature of the work and the fact that anyone can question their code and change it, if it does not attain the desired standard.
